Are VZ and the LHBTIQA+-community at VZ doing enough for Belonging?

Compared to other companies, we’re getting a lot right at VodafoneZiggo, but there’s room for improvement. The fundamentals are all in place: you can be yourself and don’t have to worry about having to hide certain parts of your identity. On the other hand, more could be done on the practical side of things. What are the arrangements, for instance, concerning parental leave if you’re a homosexual couple having a baby? There’s nothing on the matter in the CLA. Of course, this only affects very few people within the company, so in terms of costs to the company, I think it wouldn’t be a problem. It is precisely by having good arrangements in place for the exceptions that you show that you are there for everyone.

What does the Pride Utrecht theme 'U Belong' mean to you?

It’s a luxury that I feel at home, but if you don’t have that feeling, then it can be very uncomfortable. In my opinion, a sense of belonging is an essential basic need for everyone, and that’s why it’s so important that there’s a place somewhere for everyone. If you are of a different orientation, then you’re at a higher risk of being excluded, and that makes it especially important that an environment is created that you can latch on to. I think it’s wonderful that Utrecht Pride has made this central to its campaign this year.

What does the message of the ring mean to you?

For young people who want to come to Pride from places where celebrating Pride is not yet a normality, or have only just mustered up the courage to bring along a brother, sister or parent, or haven’t fully come out yet, the ring can really provide support. It shows that there are more people who are here for the first time, or don’t know anybody yet, or are open to having a chat. I think that this can help to create a feeling that you belong and are welcome.
