Growing in your career? To Tijana Davidovic it's seemingly effortless. Four and a half years ago, she joined VodafoneZiggo as a Finance intern. Today, she can call herself Senior Business Controller and her insights are highly regarded by key figures in the company. That's no mean feat. What's the secret to her success?
Tijana's answer is very simple: "I'm not afraid to take on a difficult task. And then I'll give it my all to make the very best of it. When you have some good results under your belt, asking for the corresponding recognition is made so much easier. From an extra project to a raise or promotion, everything I've ever asked for from my manager, I've been given." Any other secrets? "Having clarity on what your mission is and having the discipline to keep executing on that mission. Because of that I was able to offer a novel approach and bring about change. I questioned old ways of thinking and suggested new perspectives that broke with tradition."
Tijana relishes a challenge, obviously. "And it's great to notice that VodafoneZiggo takes me seriously. Sometimes a finance manager will call me directly, or even the CFO. That kind of openness is very special and I value it tremendously." Just like the openness and support she gets from her team. For a long time, she was the novice among experienced seniors. "I am incredibly grateful for all their efforts to help me excel in my work and owe much of my success to my team and to the people-oriented professional atmosphere here, which I so enjoy. Leaving this company would be very difficult for me. I've already turned down a couple of offers."
Tijana grew up in Serbia before leaving for her university abroad. So quite unsurprisingly, she loves tennis and is a huge fan of Novak Djokovic. She used to spend as much time on court as possible and now she brings her sports mindset to the work floor. Her biggest challenge? "To navigate the B2B Fixed Business to success." And then, with a big smile, "Scoring ace upon ace along the way, if I can, and engaging in lengthy rallies if I must." To help her achieve victory, Tijana draws up ambitious long-term plans in conjunction with the business, acting as a reliable advisor on business initiatives.
"I also represent Finance as a member of our Young Generation Board, a team of young, successful people hand-picked annually by the Senior Leadership Team. It is my mission on the board to emanate the younger generation's perspective and to offer out-of-the-box advice on issues of vital strategic importance. How can we do more in terms of CSR? How do we attract younger customers? And how can we help our customers and staff through the recession?"
Tijana's swift advance through the ranks at VodafoneZiggo is an achievement to be admired and she sees her recent promotion to Senior Business Controller at B2B as the icing on the cake. At the same time, her new job is no walk in the park. "I can safely say that this is one of the most difficult and challenging positions in our team. The competition in B2B Fixed Business is huge and on top of that, we have some tough decisions to make in terms of new developments and business opportunities. A thorough understanding of the available data is vital. All in all, the job requires much effort and dedication, but above all, it's a wonderful chance for me. And I don’t let chances slip away!"
